Formula 1 at the Hockenheimring: the 2014 German Grand Prix

From 18 to 20 July 2014, Formula 1 raced at the Hockenheimring. The official name of the event was “Formula 1 Grosser Preis Santander von Deutschland 2014”, after its title sponsor. It was round ten of the 2014 season, and after the 2013 race at the Nürburgring the Grand Prix returned to the circuit in Baden.

On Sunday, 20 July, Nico Rosberg won in a Mercedes ahead of Valtteri Bottas in a Williams and Lewis Hamilton in a Mercedes. Rosberg thus became the first German driver in the Formula 1 World Championship to win the German Grand Prix in a German car.

The assignment: 47 grid girls for main sponsor Santander

For decades, grid girls were part of the picture on the Formula 1 starting grid. Traditionally they held up boards with the drivers’ names or their starting numbers. At the 2014 German Grand Prix, 47 grid girls presented the main sponsor Santander on the starting grid and in the paddock. The grid girls who represent the sponsor every year were provided by eventas this time.

The assignment ran over two days, on Saturday 19 July and on race day, 20 July 2014. A team of this size needs a large talent pool and clear organisation so that every position is filled across the race weekend.

Grid girls today: what became of the format

For the 2018 season, Formula 1 abolished grid girls; “grid kids” took their place. The assignment at Hockenheim therefore dates from a time when grid girls were part of the Grand Prix weekend.
